Precision Long Line

Long-line lifting is a core capability for our team. With a versatile fleet, including the AS350 B3E, we handle complex external loads that require accuracy, coordination, and clear communication. We carry everything from beehives to concrete and heavy construction materials, with lift capacities up to 1,250 kg. Our pilots bring extensive long-line and drilling support experience from Canada, enabling confident performance in demanding conditions.

Mining & Mineral Exploration

Backcountry Helicopters delivers specialised aerial support for mining and mineral exploration in remote environments. Our pilots are highly experienced in backcountry flying and precision long-line operations, supporting drilling and exploration programmes across New Zealand. We provide safe and efficient drill support services including long-line lifting, drill relocations, equipment and freight transport, crew movements, and aerial logistics. With a strong focus on planning, communication, and operational reliability, we support projects in demanding terrain with confidence.

Surveying

We offer efficient surveying services, including repeater and weather station monitoring, snow and glacier surveys, GPS mapping, geological studies and animal surveying. With our versatile fleet and expertise as well as our location, we excel in accessing remote, mountainous terrain for a wide range of operations.

Biodiversity Work

We support various biodiversity projects across areas like Mount Aspiring National Park, The Landsborough and Siberia Valley. Partnering with organizations like Aspiring Biodiversity Trust and Southern Lakes Sanctuary, we provide reliable helicopter services for conservation efforts, ensuring access to remote and protected regions.

Fire Fighting

Backcountry Helicopters is always ready for fire suppression, equipped with a monsoon bucket and fire-retardant dispensing unit. With our diverse fleet, we provide rapid response and are on standby throughout summer for aerial firefighting when it’s needed most.

Photography & Filming

Backcountry Helicopters offers a versatile fleet and access to additional helicopters for transporting large film crews and equipment.

Our highly skilled team, with extensive experience, ensures efficient access to remote locations and provides the perfect platform for capturing stunning footage.

Rafting

We work with our experienced guiding partners to transport rafting groups to various rivers across the region.
