About.
For over 20 years, Backcountry Helicopters has been flying adventurers into the remote and rugged heart of New Zealand’s South Island. Based in Makarora, just 45 minutes from Wānaka – we’re surrounded by some of the country’s most spectacular backcountry.
Part of the family-owned Wanaka Helicopters Group, established in 1992, we bring local knowledge, skill, and a genuine passion for the outdoors to every flight.
Our team provides customised helicopter hunting and fishing trips and transport, the iconic Heli-Siberia adventure, and dependable helicopter support for commercial projects across Otago, South Westland, the West Coast, and beyond.
We also operate scenic and charter flights connecting guests to luxury lodges, private retreats, and destinations including Queenstown, Wānaka, Makarora, Fiordland and the West Coast.
